How One Nigerian is Mainstreaming Feminism Through the Media

27 Jan 2026

What will it take to win was the thought that preoccupied my mind as I spent countless hours arguing with men on Twitter that women deserve basic rights. Before then, I had never thought that men deem women as an inferior gender, or that women believe it too. But as I observed the role Nigerian media plays in amplifying and reinforcing these patriarchal beliefs, I became aware that Nigeria needs a media platform that serves women. It’s upon this ideology that Naija Feminists Media was born.

Naija Feminists Media (NFM) became an organisation by feminists for all women. The organisation works with feminists who believe in radical change and are committed to raising

feminist consciousness in all parts of Nigeria. Through NFM, Nigerian feminists highlighted the everyday issues affecting women’s lives and their achievements. They report on stories that concern them and analyse gender discourses to facilitate readers' understanding of feminism. They also lead online advocacy conversations and offline engagements related to women and girls.

NFM also partners with key industry stakeholders to improve the lives of women and girls. The organisation was central to projects like the Albinism Advocacy Pageant, amplifying the voices of women with albinism in the media and legislative campaign, leading to an increase in women’s political representation.

Although the organisation remains unfunded, it has already gained significant attention, earning recognitionin the 2025 Report Her Awards for excellence in inclusive reporting and advocacy.
