Why Grassroots Education Is Essential for Achieving the SDGs

18 Aug 2026

During a school outreach in Ojo, Lagos Nigeria, I asked a classroom of students a simple question: 'Who has heard of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?' The silence that followed reminded me that one of our greatest sustainability challenges isn't only climate change or poverty - it's awareness. It’s ironic that many of the young people whose futures depend on it have never been part of the conversation.

The knowledge gap between the urban areas and grassroots/ local communities is at an alarming rate. Awareness of sustainability in grassroots should follow the existing medium of dissemination of information at that level. Through the Floo_initiative, I began introducing students to the SDGs and we have been able to reach over 150 students in three different schools localizing the SDGs.

SDG 4 (Quality Education) is the foundation of national development. When young people don't just learn about SDGs but experience it, they understand ecosystems, they connect systems, they become leaders. It is about equipping them with the knowledge, critical thinking and sense of responsibility to shape a more sustainable future.

If we truly want to leave no one behind, sustainability education must reach the classrooms and communities that are too often overlooked. Let's come together to build a sustainable future from the ground up.
