The Talent We Cannot Afford to Lose

Every day, the world loses ideas that could have transformed lives. Not because there’s a shortage of talent, but because there's not an equal opportunity for talent to be discovered.

Imagine the scientist who never entered a laboratory, the entrepreneur whose business never received support, or the young girl whose education ended long before her dreams did. The absence of equality of opportunity for women and girls goes beyond personal loss and affects families, communities, economies and the future we all wish to shape.

Gender equality is sometimes said to be about fairness. It is. It’s equally a question of advance, however. Achieving sustainable development means unleashing the potential of women and girls, as Sustainable Development Goal 5 reminds us. Diverse perspectives drive innovation, strengthen leadership, improve decision-making, and create solutions that benefit everyone.

The costs of inequality are not solely those of women’s barriers. It is assessed based on what has not been discovered, what businesses have not been established, what policies have not been formed and what lives might have been better had some talent been nurtured.

A sustainable future cannot be built by limiting potential. It can only be built by recognising it, investing in it, and allowing it to thrive regardless of gender. The world does not have talent to waste. Every opportunity we create today is an investment in a stronger, more inclusive tomorrow.
