When Communities Lead, the SDGs Become Possible

13 Oct 2026

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will not be achieved through global commitments alone. They become possible when communities are empowered to understand, own and lead the solutions that affect their lives.

Across communities, people already possess knowledge, resilience and innovative ideas capable of driving sustainable development. Yet, they are often treated as beneficiaries rather than partners and leaders.

Community-led development changes this approach. When women, young people, persons with disabilities and other marginalised groups participate meaningfully in decision-making, development becomes more inclusive, responsive and sustainable. Local leadership can improve access to health and education, strengthen livelihoods, promote gender equality, advance climate action and build accountable institutions.

My experience working with communities has reinforced one important lesson: sustainable change cannot be imposed; it must be co-created. Communities are more likely to sustain solutions when they have a voice in identifying problems, designing interventions, implementing programmes and measuring results.

SDG 11 calls for inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable communities. But achieving it requires us to connect local action with the broader SDG agenda. The world does not lack solutions. What we need is greater trust in communities and greater investment in their leadership.
