Youth Inclusion as a Pathway to Sustainable Peace
10 Jun 2026

Across many communities in Nigeria, young people are often seen as victims or perpetrators of conflict, but rarely as partners in building peace. This mindset must change. Young people are not just the future; they are already leading conversations, initiatives, and actions that strengthen communities and promote sustainable development.
Through my work in peacebuilding and community development, I have seen how youth inclusion can transform communities. When young people are given opportunities to participate in governance, education, advocacy, and peace processes, they become powerful agents of positive change. From community dialogues to civic engagement programs, many young Nigerians are using their voices and skills to address violence, inequality, unemployment, and social division.
At Ominya Initiative, we continue to engage young people and women in conversations around leadership, peace, gender inclusion, and active citizenship. These efforts contribute directly to Sustainable Development Goal 16, which promotes peace, justice, and strong institutions, while also supporting other goals linked to education, equality, and development.
Sustainable peace cannot be achieved without young people at the center of decision-making. Investing in youth leadership, inclusion, and community participation is not just important; it is necessary for building safer, stronger, and more resilient societies.
