At just 20, Kerry Mwita is an award winning Social and Gender Justice Activist. He overcame adversity by challenging the Judicial Service Commission to establish GBV Courts at County Level In Kenya and the Chief Justice Hon. Martha Koome responded to his campaign demands.
Kerry Mwita is a brave and passionate human rights activist from Migori Kenya, working to advance human rights through advocacy on Gender Based Violence, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and social justice. Fueled by the alarming proportions of GBV in Migori County, Mwita is known for a number of impactful advocacy campaigns in the fight against gender violence and the advancement of social justice in Kenya.
He serves as the Board Vice Chairperson at Safe Engage Foundation, Youth Advocate at NAYA Kenya, Emerging Leader for Change Fellow at Women Deliver, Next Gen Fellow at Forum Civ and Advocacy Champion at Nguvu Collective.
He has notably spearheaded a campaign championing for the establishment of a Gender Justice Court in Migori. He has also been involved in the anti Femicide movement in Kenya and leverages media advocacy to champion for gender equality and human rights. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Laws degree at Mount Kenya University.
His work has seen him being feted with a number of awards including including being a finalist in the Upcoming Human Rights Defender of the Year 2024 by Defenders Coalition Kenya; a finalist of the Africans Rising Activist of the Year Award 2024 by the Africans Rising Movement; recipient of the African Art for Advocacy Award 2023 by Youth Power Hub and Y-ACT Kenya; and the first runner-up in the National Essay and Video Competition Award of 2022 by UNICEF Kenya and The Standard Group PLC in Kenya.
