Simbiat Bakare is an investigative journalist and the founder of Naija Feminists Media. She leads a coalition of feminists that leverages technology and media to improve women’s representation in the news and advance gender equality in Nigeria.
She has also authored several women-centred reports featured in Africa’s biggest newspapers, including Premium Times, The Guardian, The Cable, and Modern Ghana. Her latest investigation on how vulnerable women are recruited from Facebook and subjected to exploitative surrogacy practices led to Meta shutting down over nine surrogacy groups with 32,000 members on Facebook. Simbiat has further trained over 1,000 youth on media literacy while raising feminist consciousness.
Despite receiving death threats for her advocacy online and no funding support for her organisation’s work, Simbiat’s platform has supported consequential projects for women across diverse groups, including entrepreneurial women, women in politics, and women with disabilities.
In testament to her work, Simbiat has amassed several accolades, including the Global Excellence Award, the She Global Award, She Leads Africa 50 under 30, 2025 Crest Africa Leaders, the True Story Award, and the African Fact-Checking Award.
